In Both sides, highly translucent urushi permeates the washi, attempting to dissolve the very boundary between front and back. As we move through life, we embody many roles, emotions, and shifting identities. These are often described as opposing sides of the self, yet they are not truly separate. Both are equally part of who we are. Within this work, even the surface perceived as the “back” appears without a clear boundary. It emerges as an ambiguous space that belongs neither entirely to one side nor the other—a quiet state released from fixed roles and meanings, and perhaps something close to a person’s unguarded self. Rather than separating front from back, the work allows both to coexist. In that uncertain space between them, distinctions begin to fade, leaving only the presence of the material itself. The orientation of the work is intentionally left open and may be determined by the exhibition context.
