The Master of Spanish Realism
With the precision of a watchmaker and the sensitivity of a poet, Aurelio Rodríguez López (Génave, Jaén, 1958) has built an artistic career spanning more than four decades, establishing himself as an emblematic figure of realism and hyperrealism in Spain. His work, which moves between portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, captures the essence of everyday life with technical mastery that transcends mere representation, inviting the viewer to a profound and reflective contemplation.
Initially trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Baeza under the guidance of Juan de Dios Muñoz Valor, Aurelio expanded his knowledge at the “Soto Mesa” Painting Studio in Madrid. Since his first solo exhibition in the Spanish capital in 1979, his career has been a continuous journey of exploration and technical refinement, excelling in the use of pastel and oil painting. Throughout his career, Aurelio has participated in numerous exhibitions across Europe, America, and Asia and has been honored with prestigious awards, including the first prize at the International Pastel Biennale in China and the ‘Maggie Price Award.’ Moreover, his work has been selected in renowned competitions such as the ‘BP Portrait Award’ at the National Portrait Gallery in London. His dedication and contribution to the art of pastel painting have led him to become a member of the esteemed Master Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).
Among his most notable projects are commissioned portraits of the royalty of Bahrain and Jordan, as well as prominent figures from the worlds of industry, music, and sports. Several of his works have been auctioned by Sotheby’s at the annual Save the Children gala in London, a testament to his recognition on the international art scene.
Currently, Aurelio resides and works in Estepona, Málaga, where he continues to develop his artistic legacy and share his passion for realism and figurative art.
