Created in the wake of the devastating fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court, this piece uses a stark palette of black, white, and grey to capture the collision of catastrophe and human compassion. The deep, heavy black evokes the ashes left by the blaze, carrying the weight of grief and loss. Meanwhile, the scattered flecks of white and grey represent the glimmers of humanity that emerged amid the disaster—the brave firefighters charging into danger, the spontaneous donations from local residents, and the warmth of neighbours supporting one another. Through this work, I hope viewers will feel, within its subdued tones, that while the flames may have consumed buildings, they could never destroy the warmth of Hong Kong people looking out for each other. Beneath the ashes lies the hope of a united city and the enduring truth that love prevails in humanity.
