What fascinated me most was the possibility that curves, contours, and larger shapes could become part of a stricter structural order. The painting continues an earlier exploration of compressed vertical space, where the drapery sharply closes the depth of the image. I wanted to use the light less as a tool for modeling than as a way of organizing the rhythm of the composition. I was drawn to the tension between the desaturated flesh tones of the figure and the dense surrounding reds. The painting was based on an intimate domestic moment of my wife, repeated many times in everyday life. The elevated viewpoint transforms a familiar moment into something distant and strangely unfamiliar, suspended between observation and construction.
