“Humanity Unseen” This mixed media (Acrylic paint, Mirrored glass on recycled Wood) piece highlights a homeless character, smoking a pipe, nursing a leg injury staring out at the viewer extending a finger forward. The contrasting colours are vibrant and emotive intended to stir interest and empathy, while the mirrored glass offers the viewer a chance to visually enter the artwork. Unnerved we stare at ourselves in the work, forced to engage with the feelings the artwork inspires for the character, the pervading socio-economic issue that is homelessness and then our very own humanity in our dealings with these members of our society. In the Caribbean, the homeless, a nationality of their own who claim among their ranks the illiterate and the unemployed persons, the mentally ill and the addicted are contemporary examples of the true descendants of the lasting crimes against humanity perpetrated in the Caribbean
