I painted Matador after returning from my first visit to Barcelona. That city had such a wonderful impact on me that I needed to express it. I found the architecture, people, culture and vibe so intoxicating. At first, the painting is bold and brash. But, The more you look, you can see a lot of layers and subtlety lying underneath the vividness of the colors. I never like to describe in definitives with abstract work, I think it's up to the observer to discover what the painting says to them. However, I see a Bull and Matador fallen together, rage and grace in a final dance. The Catalonian flag hidden in the color on top of the black field.
