I have a weakness for beauty, especially the beauty that emanates from people. This doesn't necessarily conform to aesthetic standards of beauty. This type of beauty is harder to capture because it's shielded from superficial gazes. It's the kind of beauty I like to find, and it's everywhere. In this portrait of Anthony, I believe I've found it. I thank him and his family for allowing him to pose for me. Inspired by Velázquez's paintings, the challenge has been to portray, in a beautiful, dignified, and joyful way, a person who seemingly doesn't meet conventional beauty standards. It has been a difficult portrait, but I'm very satisfied with the result. My aim is for that beauty to be appreciated and for that to be all that matters.
