What makes us human? It is the question that has perplexed every philosopher just as much as the next person. A vast majority go about their days in complex urban societies with less than a passing thought of our place on this Earth: congregations of people which possess any number of conflicting cultural norms, ethnic categorizations, religious sentiments, and educational values. Our mass culture incentivizes conformity and develops a great ambivalence towards the role of our original environment; plants, animals, and virtually all other living organisms are treated as “other”. Yet when we strip ourselves bare of the shackles of modern society, we may be reminded that human nature is just as primal and unbroken as our most savage jungles and deepest oceans. We forget that we were born from the very wilderness we desire to control.
