This drawing is dense with the subtle tones of colored pencil and depicts the pigs I cared for as a livestock operations assistant on a local Appalachian farm. I fed, watered, and playfully scratched these pigs everyday through rain, wind, and heat. In return, they nipped at my knees and snuffled at my ankles. Regardless, one pig looked up at me in a grassy pasture on the edge of the woods. It appears like a smile pulls at the corner of its mouth. This pig would soon be slaughtered for food, however I feel satisfied that I could give it the best, ethically cared for life while providing food for my community.
