Heaven Unglimpsed is a reflection on the enduring, cyclical natural of poverty. The scene is drawn from a midnight encounter where I came across two still figures deep in the shadows, dressed in traditional Filipino attire as if prepared for burial. Witnessing these two phantoms, a haunting realization struck me: even in death, they remain poor. Through the medium of oil paint, I sought to recreate the encounter - the coarse, strained concrete walls, the layers of urban grime, the piles of detritus, the subtle, shifting language of the nocturne’s shadows. Ultimately, the piece questions the boundaries between the living and the forgotten. In this eternal midnight, hardship remains the only tangible reality, leaving heaven completely unglimpsed.
