In July 2020, I invited women to photograph themselves holding an apple in their mouths and send me the image. Thirty-six women responded. I painted each one, changing nothing of their chosen composition. This portrait shows me alongside my mother, photographed during lockdown. Behind us: a painting from my student years at Bezalel, and a sculpture she made. The apple does not fall far from the tree — inheritance, continuity, the things we carry without knowing. The apple is loaded with history: the fruit that made a woman guilty. In this series the women do not hide. They hold it openly, reclaiming the transgression as presence and strength.
