The Other Side of the Vejigante: Despite the Silence explores the invisible presence of women within Puerto Rican cultural traditions. Through a female figure dressed in the vejigante costume—a historically male role—and carrying the maga flower as an act of cultural stewardship, the work confronts imposed silence and submission as conditions that, far from negating, strengthen. The sewn mouth and closed eyes are not signs of defeat but of an inner resistance that blossoms toward a future of empowerment and legitimate belonging.
