Orange Tree XVI explores the dreamlike, imaginative qualities of the Mediterranean landscape. Having relocated from the UK to Spain in 2014, I have spent the last decade living in Andalucía and the Costa Blanca. Rather than capturing these environments literally, my work functions as a subconscious reflection of the region's fruit and olive trees. In this piece, I wanted to create a sense of vibrant abundance, balancing the heavy, stylized forms of the branches with the rhythmic pattern of the citrus and blossoms. The flat turquoise background removes the scene from reality, evoking a surreal, atmospheric light that contrasts with the intense orange of the fruit. Through structured, hypnotic brushwork, the canvas becomes a space of personal imagination, reinterpreting a classic Spanish motif.
