Alptraum #1 (Nightmare #1) explores the the fear of predetermination. We like to feel like we are in control of what happens to us. When we face something we have no power over, that naturally triggers a harrowing feeling. Control is a natural human desire, it is a vice that lets us suffer but also leads to great success. Alptraum #1 is a nightmare that exposes the viewer to what they have no control over. The fragments that can be seen on the horizon are images of my own Chromosomes. I have drawn my blood, from which I have cultivated leukocytes and subsequently fixed, stained, photographed and printed their chromosomes in a laboratory. With this, I wanted to depict something that, in a way, is fundamentally in control us even though we can‘t see it.
