Earth, from the series Los Cuatro Elementos, is an acrylic abstract work that evokes the rich texture of earth above and below the surface. Dotted with bits of sand, paper, burlap fabric and hemp rope and painted in an earthen palette of browns and beiges, the work boasts a textural composition that is both tactile and organic. This piece is well worked through, depicting the land from both outside and within, exposing its veins which seem to be scattered everywhere and even appears to go beyond the limits of the canvas. The use of burlap and hemp was deliberate, not just for the natural tones, but also for the value they bring as cash crops. The paper depicts the earth as it is – rock and stone while the ragged twine adds to the roughness and bulk, accentuating the wild and coarse character of the land. The images are influenced by the dry, expansive rural fields, deep countrysides and their textures, and the tenacity of life buried underneath it all.
