This piece is confronting us with a disturbing depiction of what another animal might look like if it was as addicted to consumption as we are. I fondly call these paintings "The Stuff Monkeys". But really they are a reflection of the fact that our species should be called "Homo consumerus", rather than "Homo Sapiens" which means the wise humans. Consumption has become the reflexive response to every emotion - buying things to celebrate, buying something to cheer ourselves up, buying something to feel productive, to feel creative, to fill a hole we can't put words to. We are the only animals who accrue such a volume of stuff in this way, to comfort ourselves, to feel safe and accomplished. But the pursuit of stuff is endless and then we have to carry it around with us when we move as an outward symbol of our identity. This is an absurd and confronting reminder to live lightly.
