Mysterious and intentionally enigmatic, this portrait asks the question, what is left when we remove all forms of superficial identity? Digital technology is changing humanity, how we communicate, see ourselves and each other. Social media emphasises trivial differences of identity which does not reflect who we truly are. With no biography, the subject is simply human and an expression of our shared humanity. The work is a question, not an answer, a space for the viewer to construct their own meaning about the subject. Deeney’s unique creative process begins with a sketch, which is later digitised and refined before being laser cut to create a series of interlocking, geometric shapes that are painted and finally composed back together. The predefined shapes capture the expressive, high-energy abstraction of the artistic. His innovative process fuses old and new, paying homage to time-honoured mark-making while using contemporary technology to complete his work.
