This painting continues the themes from my Out of the Water exhibition, held in November 2024 in Warsaw, where I presented works inspired by my life on Lanzarote. In my paintings, I explore my experiences of observing underwater life—its organic forms and luminous effects—contrasted with the post-volcanic landscape of the island. These landscapes provoke reflections on evolution and genetics, particularly the development of protective systems. One of the examples is the camouflage of the octopus, which reminds me of cultural masks created within human societies. Drawing from Picasso’s fusion of African masks with the European way of expressing the sacred, I examine the interplay between concealment and identity. Through this approach, I capture the tension between adaptation and transformation, self-protection and self-expression. I use a self-taught technique of spreading light across the painting, applying oil over a treated board with handmade wooden sticks and spatulas.
