'It's Not Enough To Stay Warm' explores the beauty and the heartache of becoming one's authentic self in a world that is not designed to fit around you. The portrait obscured by the industrial harshness of the rust coloured elements is Connie Sgarbossa, front-woman of recently defunct post-hardcore band SeeYouSpaceCowboy. This painting is part of a series of work in which I explore the obscuring of portraits of women and feminine people from marginalised backgrounds, to a greater or lesser extent, through the use of cubist elements. My aim is to represent the inherent conflict in a background that stands against a once again increasingly hostile world for people-of-colour, trans-folk and other marginalised backgrounds, alongside the strength and power of the individual who rises above the external pressures placed upon them.
