The weary figure of this man, staring to a point off the frame, speaks volumes about his life. The New York City subway, often a harsh environment, can also offer a strange sense of warmth and familiarity to those for whom a moving train is their only shelter. He clutches an old-fashioned walking stick, a detail that contrasts sharply with the two passengers beside him. They seem bound for a more certain destination but their eyes closed, faces obscured by surgery masks, and belongings held securely in their laps. Their bended posture, almost symmetrical to the protagonist's, ironically underscores his lively eyes and pride. In this piece, watercolor is combined with touches of gouache, creating a dynamic interplay of transparency and opacity.
