This acrylic submission depicts two things: the modern socio-economic condition of the Philippines through the painting at the center, and the root of the issue (the country's history of feudalism) through the retablo motif. The typical use of a retablo is for religious purposes as a means to perpetuate a feeling of solemn piety. The painting of The Tenants attempts to invoke a similar reflective feeling but with a secular, and historical, subject. The Tenants is the first of a series of paintings depicting modern Filipino issues that when stacked together create a complete retablo composition.
